Pixar's 'Turning Red' is My Favourite Pixar Film, It's Also the Most Triggering
On watching teenage girls turn into red pandas ❤️
Hello! Hope you’re well. I wrote a piece on ‘Turning Red’ for ABC Everyday, excerpted below, but you can read the rest over here. Thank you to @fitzfitzpatrick for this really cute illo! Hit reply to this email to talk to me :)
Turning Red is my favourite Pixar film — it's also the most triggering.
From Bao director Domee Shi, the coming-of-age story follows 13-year-old Canadian Meilin 'Mei' Lee who magically changes into a fluffy red panda when she's emotional.
The film is deeply relatable, especially for those who grew up in immigrant families in Western countries like me. (I was born in Germany but moved to Australia as a baby; my parents left Vietnam because of the war).
Mei goes to school and obediently helps to look after her family temple in Toronto. The change into a red panda happens as she hits puberty and experiences conflict between accepting herself as she is, and her family.
The pull away from family and the desire to be a "dutiful" daughter closely mirrors my own upbringing, and no doubt others who are, or who have, struggled through their teenage years.

The most unrealistic part of the film is totally this though 😂😂😂😂:
