Vol. 5: Yes, That's Sydney's Iconic UTS Building In 'The Matrix'
A new SBS murder mystery set during the Gold Rush, Keanu in a bathtub with a rubber duckie đ€, Russell Crowe is roaming free again!

Great news this week for Sydney as we MIGHT be able to go to the cinemas again by mid-October! I will be racing to see âShang-Chiâ as soon as we are able to!
Whatâs Shaking:
đż âThe Matrix Resurrectionsâ trailer dropped this week. It features some Covid-safe activities like socially distanced Neo talking to a therapist, Neo chilling in a bath with a duck on his head, as well as some non Covid-safe activities like shaking hands and sharing an elevator with like, 20 other people.
Here is Lana Wachowski describing Keanu Reeveâs reaction to watching the film, via Polygon:
âWhen we showed the film to Keanu, he was really blown away by it. He was typical Keanu being incredibly insightful⊠He was sitting there going, âTwenty years ago, you told a story ago about the coming 20 years of digital virtual life and how it was going to impact us and how we could think about it and gave us a frame to think about it. And then you took the same characters, the same stories, and you made it about the next 20 years.â
Does this mean he digs it? Either way, no scene will ever top this kicker from the OG, which features Sydneyâs very own UTS building:
đż A number of Australian filmmakers have paid tribute to âThe Wireâ actor Michael K. Williams who died last week. Per the SMH, Australian director John Hillcoat says; âHe had this hyper sensitivity â Iâve heard this term, âinsect radarâ â where he was so aware of what was going on around him in a really deep way.â
đż SBS drama âNew Gold Mountainâ is being released on Oct. 13 via Free-to-Air TV and SBS on Demand. The series was filmed around Melbourne and regional Victoria and is a four-part murder mystery that opens in 1857 during the gold rush. The series will follow tensions between the Chinese, European and Indigenous populations after a white woman is found dead.
Director Corrie Chen describes New Gold Mountain as a âhigh impact, authored piece of storytelling that demands attention from audiences.â
đż Elsewhere, according to this GQ profile, Matt Damon spent two days on the set of âThor: Love and Thunderâ in Sydney, reprising his cameo as Actor Loki from the previous film. (He filmed for two days but stayed for five months! Make of that what you will.) Meanwhile, Russell Crowe is now free from quarantine. He had to isolate after a crew member on his âPoker Faceâ movie tested positive to Covid-19 a couple of weeks ago.
đż I am looking respectfully at these photos of Andrew Garfield. In this wide-ranging Variety profile, he addresses those âSpider-Man: No Way Homeâ rumours đđđ:
âYou canât help but imagine scenes and moments of âOh, my God, how fucking cool would it be if they did that?ââ Garfield says. âBut itâs important for me to say on the record that this is not something Iâm aware I am involved in.â
Do I believe him? Maybe! Or maybe his hands are tied. Anyway, I am also looking respectfully at these photos of Tony Leung.
đż Postscripts: Edgar Wrightâs âLast Night In Sohoâ will be released in Australia on Nov. 18. Kirsten Stewart on playing Lady Di; âShe harbored an immense rageâ. âStar Wars Visionsâ starts streaming Sept. 22 on Disney+. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is leaving the Amazon TV reboot of âMr. & Mrs. Smithâ. âParks and Recâ band Mouse Rat makes it onto the Billboard charts!

New Matrix looks pretty cool. Whole thing looks like it has similarities to the original, but palette etc also looks quite different here and there, I think. Exciting.
That's a nice quote from Hillcoat and The Road was a fairly solid adaptation of a hard book. Love MKW, very sad to think of him going and also not being able to look forward to him popping up to wow me again. A genuinely great actor, so much presence.
And thanks for flagging New Gold Mountain, that sounds great. Love anything on the subject of Australian history, as long as it doesn't have shitty apologist vibes.
Big ups!
