I Did Not Expect Pixar's 'Turning Red' to Be So Triggering
On 'Hawkeye', the second 'Venom', and a bunch of Vin Diesels saying "family!"
I saw ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ over the weekend, mostly for the post-credits scene which links the Venom world to the MCU’s Spider-Man universe. The film itself was loud and over the top, I found it slightly better than the first one, and it’s even funnier if you view it as a romcom.
🍿 What’s Shaking 🍿
🍿 Acclaimed Aboriginal actor David Dalaithngu has died. Dalithngu was a trailblazer and appeared in films including ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’, Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Australia’ and ‘Crocodile Dundee’.
🍿 Pixar has released a teaser trailer for ‘Turning Red’, which is crazy triggering for me because my own Asian-tiger mother used to rock up at my primary school randomly to… watch me too I guess? (I FEEL SO SEEN) The film is directed by Domee Shi, who did the amazing short ‘Bao’, and follows a Chinese-Canadian girl who turns into a giant red panda whenever she’s stressed or excited.
🍿 The first two episodes of ‘Hawkeye’ have dropped on Disney+. It’s pretty charming so far, helped no doubt by Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop and being set at Christmas time! The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, and a highlight has definitely been the parody ‘Steve Rogers: The Musical’ (which needs to be made irl!!) and Pizza Dog (who has his own instagram account). Here’s a short profile on the amazing Native American and deaf actress Alaqua Cox, who plays Echo, the character we get a glimpse of in the second episode.
🍿 The third instalment of the Jurassic Park reboot called ‘World Dominion’ will be released next June. In the meantime here’s a prologue to the film which is basically four minutes of dinosaur asmr and a bunch of them hanging out! Then it cuts out to people wildly running away as a T-Rex approaches, which is par the course for Jurassic movies.
🍿 ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ tickets have gone on sale. And interestingly, producer Amy Pascal says it won’t be the last for Spidey or Tom Holland:
"This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie. We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We're thinking of this as three films, and now we're going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”
I am hoping they go down the Miles Morales route too, given that Donald Glover appeared as Morales’ uncle in ‘Homecoming’.
🍿 I’m really looking forward to ‘Licorice Pizza’, a coming of age film set in the 1970s. But one scene some critics have highlighted gives me pause - it features a white male restaurant owner who speaks to his Japanese wife in a fake Asian accent. One socialist told NBC News, “The film is not even about Asians or race, and what it does is normalise this violence, this casual anti-Asian racism.” Another reason to have more BIPOC in writer’s rooms!
🍿 A good, nay, perfect tweet:
🍿 Last Shakes 🍿
Steven Sondheim has died. Another thing millennials are to blame for, according to Ridley Scott. Where are those photos Remy Hii took of Tom Holland in ‘Far From Home’? Vogue spends 24 hours with ‘Squid Games’ HoYeon Jung. The cutest story about Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock:
